Tris ate a cold supper of dried meat and cheese while peering out of the cave, watching for Ormur. There was no sign of him, and Tris finally lay down on the bedroll for lack of anything better to do. He didn’t expect to sleep, but weariness overcame him, and he closed his eyes.

He awoke to the familiar shape of Ormur stretched out beside him. Tris wanted to ask where he’d been, but he was too sleepy to do more than throw an arm over him. He was reassured by the way Ormur wriggled closer to press his back against Tris, and he dropped back into sleep.

Tris was used to waking with the sun, even when he couldn’t see it, so he was already half-awake when he heard a soft tapping sound. He opened his eyes to see Philip at the entrance to the cave, grimacing apologetically. He jerked his head toward his own cave and Tris nodded, getting up carefully so as not to wake Ormur.

Tris pulled on a shirt and tried to smooth down his hair as he walked to the other cave. “What is it?”

“Sorry,” Philip said. “It’s just that I thought you’d be the best person for this.”

Ejoler stood beside him, looking even grimmer than usual. “We looked in on you last night, but you were already asleep.”

“And there was no point in waking you,” Philip said with a firm look at Ejoler. “But we need to do something.”

Tris was feeling more than a little alarmed as they both turned to the back of the cave. Meira was sitting there, holding a lamb. It started to bleat, and she hastily grabbed at its mouth.

“If anybody else hears they might eat her,” Meira whispered, her eyes too big and worried for Tris to even consider laughing.

Tris went to her and picked up the lamb with the ease of long practice. He rubbed its long, tawny ears as he examined it.

“Meira, well, ate the mother,” Philip explained.

“Accidentally,” Meira protested. “I never saw the baby.”

“So, she understandably feels responsible for it now,” Philip continued.

Ejoler sighed. “We waited until dark and brought the creature in without anyone noticing, but this is obviously not a sustainable situation.”

Tris smothered a grin. He had the feeling no one in the cave had gotten much sleep last night.

“I think she’s hungry,” Meira said anxiously. “I gave her water, but she won’t eat anything else.”

“It’s a he,” Tris said, “and he’s young still for weaning. But there’s no milk around here for him, I’m afraid.”

“So what do we do?” Meira’s anxious expression changed to something more determined as Tris exchanged looks with the others. “We have to help him.”

Tris patted the lamb reassuringly. But it was a problem. If he were back home on the farm, there would be options — milk to be had and quiet hearths to sit beside to coax the little lamb to eat.

“There’s one thing we can try,” Tris said. “Take him back to his flock and see if another ewe will let him nurse.
